This summer, my four kids—ages 13, 11, 9, and 7—are heading back to Camp Cho-Yeh in Livingston, Texas, and we couldn’t be more excited! As a Christian camp, Cho-Yeh blends adventure, faith, and personal growth into an experience that shapes kids in ways everyday life just can’t.
One of the biggest benefits of overnight camp is the chance for kids to grow in independence. They get to step outside their normal routines, make new friends, and tackle challenges without relying on Mom and Dad. Whether it’s ziplining, taking part in the Alpha/Omega battles, or getting gloriously messy in Crud Wars, they build resilience, courage, and teamwork—without even realizing it! Sending my 6 year old last year had me all in my feels but picking him up I could literally feel how much more confident he felt!!
Beyond the exciting outdoor activities, Cho-Yeh is deeply rooted in Christian values. Every day, campers have devotional time, where they can reflect on their faith, engage in meaningful discussions, and develop a deeper relationship with God. The camp’s environment is designed to encourage spiritual growth in a way that’s fun, engaging, and age-appropriate.
There’s something special about the chants, songs, and traditions that make camp feel like home. Kids walk away feeling like they’re part of something bigger—a tight-knit community of believers and friends. It’s a place where they can be themselves, cheer on their team, and bond with others over shared experiences.
As much as I love giving my kids the space to grow, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss them like crazy! Thankfully, Camp Cho-Yeh makes it easier by providing daily photo updates through an app. Parents can check in, see their kids’ smiling faces, and get a glimpse into their adventures. It’s a huge comfort to know they’re safe, happy, and having the time of their lives!! You can also write them letters to be delivered every day while they are at camp! It was one of their favorite things last year getting a piece of home!
Overnight camp isn’t just about filling a few summer weeks—it’s about giving kids an experience that lasts a lifetime. They come home more confident, more independent, and more connected to their faith. And as a parent, there’s nothing better than seeing them light up as they tell their stories and count down the days until next summer!! My older two kids still talk to some of the camp friends from last year and my oldest will be sharing a bunk with some of the girls she met last year, how amazing right?! Not only friends in cabin mates but the counselors a truly one of a kind! My kids all LOVED their counselors so much and came home telling me all of their favorite memories with them! It’s truly special the bonds they create with those kids!
If you’re like us, helping your kids learn to cultivate connections without a screen is something we are super passionate about! I love that camp puts them in a setting to be face to face with other people who are all on the same journey as them! Our kids generation is losing the ability to talk, be present and really love in the moment and I think Camp Cho-Yeh does an amazing job of reminding kids how to be KIDS! 🤍
